Ace's Basement 2428 High Point Rd, Greensboro, NC Phone: 336-263-7625 Description: Smaller club that hosts a lot of touring bands and local shows of varying sizes. Greensboro is a great rock and roll town, shows there are usually very fun. The Brewery 3009 Hillsborough St., Raleigh, NC Phone: 919-834-7018 Description: Medium-sized bar and club that hosts a punk show every month or so. Solid PA setup and a good stage. Every show I've been to has featured a pretty well-known group, but I think it's possible to book a DIY show here. Cat's Cradle 300 E Main St., Carrboro, NC Phone: 919-967-9053 Description: Chapel Hill's most famous venue, very pro with an expensive PA setup and a large capacity. Usually caters to nationally-known touring bands, but also has lots of cheap, local-only shows on off nights. Disco Rodeo 2820 Industrial Drive, Raleigh, NC Phone: (919) 836-8535 Description: The closest thing central NC has to a club like the 9:30 in DC or the Tremont Music Hall's large room in Charlotte. This is where bands like the Strokes play when they roll through town. Green Eggs and Jam 92-A North Lexington Ave, Asheville, NC Phone: 929-254-3232 Description: A small record store that hosts a lot of underground punk and hardcore shows. From what I can tell Asheville has a really amazing scene. King's 424 S McDowel St, Raleigh, NC Phone: 919-831-1005 Description: I haven't actually been here yet, but I know these guys host the occasional punk show. Local 506 506 W Franklin St., Chapel Hill, NC Phone: 919-942-5506 Description: Long-running Chapel Hill dive that has hosted many a punk show in its day. Now it mostly caters to different crowds, but you'll still see a '77-style band taking the stage here every few months. Nightlight 405 1/2 West Rosemary St., Chapel Hill, NC Phone: 919-933-5550 Description: Small used book/record store with the cheapest beer in town. Can accomodate around 100 people, so they cater mostly to local bands and smaller touring bands (including a lot of avant-garde stuff from what I can tell). If you're an unknown out-of-towner looking for a show this may be your best bet. PS211 211 E 3rd St., Winston-Salem, NC Phone: (336) 724-0005 Description: Another NC venue that I have never visited, but from checking out their show listings it looks like they host a good mix of smaller and medium-sized shows with both local and touring bands. Their web site has a lot of information about the club's size, sound system, etc. Soapbox Laundro-Lound 255 N Front St, Wilmington, NC Phone: 910.251.8500 Description: I haven't actually made it down to Wilmington for a show yet, but from what I tell this place hosts a lot of local punk groups and smaller touring groups. Visit their web page for booking information. Stella Blue 31 Patton Ave, Asheville, NC Phone: 828-236-2424 Description: I haven't been to this club, but judging by their calendar this seems to be where more nationally-known bands play when they come to Asheville. Tremont Music Hall 400 West Tremont Ave, Charlotte, NC Phone: 704-343-9494 Description: Large-capacity rock club that usually hosts nationally-known touring acts. Has a larger room with a gigantic stage for your MTV favorites and a back room with a 6" stage for the punks. Vincent's Ear Cafe 68B N Lexington Ave, Asheville, NC Phone: (828)-259-9119 Description: Hosts a lot of local and DIY shows. Ziggy's 433 Baity St, Winston-Salem, NC Phone: 336-748-1064 Description: Larger rock venue, seems to host the same kind of bands as the Cat's Cradle in Carrboro. |
