This does not aim to be
a complete United Mutation discography, simply a recount of my opinions
of the UM records I own, and whatever factual data that I can find out
about them (for such factual information, I just want to mention how indebted
I am to the FLEX! discography book, probably the best punk rock record
resource on the planet). If you have any of the records on this page for
trade, or any other United Mutation records, please contact daniel@deepfrybonanza.com.
Also, if you have a record that isn't here (such as the CD on Lost and
Found) and wish to contribute to the discography with cover scans, pressing
data, or a review feel free to contact me at that address as well.
 Self-titled 7"
EP
DSI #1/ Dischord Records # 10 7/8
Track Listing:
Fugitive Family / Plain Truth / Final Solution / Passout // I
Know a Place / Own Way / Lice and Flies
From FLEX!: Original 6-track version (1000
made) has lyric sheet, reissue (500 made?) has one extra track
("It's Over" at the end of side A), no lyric sheet,
xerox sleeve.
|
|
| This is United Mutation's first EP from 1983. It was
released on their own DSI label (though the record was "officially
sanctioned" by Dischord) and showcased the band at their earlier,
much more harDCore stage. Many of the classic UM elements are already
in place: most noticeably the manic, gutteral scream of Mike Brown
and (most apparently on "Lice and Flies") the band's post-psychedelic
edge. While this record is excellent hardcore, and certainly worth
any DC collector's time and energy, what makes this band really special
are the things that came later which are only hinted at here. |
Rainbow
Person EP
DSI Records #4
Track Listing:
Infinite Regression / Fat Louie / Take Your Pick
// Zone / Manna
From FLEX!: 1st pressing (1100
made): first 800 have folded paper sleeve and a lyric sheet, the
rest has a closed sleeve and no lyric sleeve. 75 copies in handmade
xerox sleeve. 2nd pressing: 500 made on blue vinyl, remastered.

|
| Rainbow Person is the final record that United Mutation
released during its existence, and the band is totally at their peak.
Their "San Francisco psychedelia meets DC hardcore" sound
was never better, and while the music was pretty much totally spastic,
John's unique vocals and the overall sense of aggression made it all
still sound like harDCore. If you're a fan of the almight VOID, Rainbow
Person is an EP that you should certainly take the time to track down.

 Freaks
Out LP
Bitzcore Records
Track Listing:
Plain Truth / Final Solution / Pass Out / It's Over / I Know
a Place / Own Way / Lice, Flies, and Vermin / You Send Me / Wake
Up / Tear Down / Happy Daze / So Morose / Sons of Sonoco / Rock
N Roll Party // Infinite Regression / Fat Louie / Take Your Pick
/ Zone / Manna / Sensations Fix / Continents / Passout
|
|
| This is the first collection of United Mutation material,
released in 1989 on Germany's Bitzcore Records, and it's as close
to a complete UM discography as you'll ever find. Containing both
of the above EPs and a few bonus live cuts. Any United Mutation fan
or harDCore aficionado should certainly own this EP, as its chronological
sequencing and completeness make it the only place where you'll see
the progression in UM's recorded work from beginning to end. This
is certainly on the difficult-to-find side now (the EPs above are
collectors items, and will set you back at least 20-30 bucks a piece
on ebay), but they're still around in some distros, and I believe
you can still mailorder this from Bitzcore. |
Kyo
Ki 7" EP
Lost and Found Records #lf010
Track Listing:
White Boy / Combat Boots / United Mutations Theme
/ Your Own Way / Out of Hand / Rock'n'Roll Party Mix // DC Screws
the World / Oh No / Lice, Flies, Vermin, and Fleas / Over the
Edge
From FLEX!: From Lost and Found
box set: 2000 made, blue vinyl. Recorded Sep 1982 at Inner Ear,
Over the Edge is live Sep-17-87. Also included are 4 tracks from
Mixed Nuts Don't Crack comp LP in a slightly diffferent mix.
|
|
| The first of many UM Records that I don't have. This
collects an unreleased studio session with the band's four tracks
from the Mixed Nuts Don't Crack compilation, so along with
Freaks Out, this pretty much completes the puzzle (as far as
records go, anyway). These sessions were UM's first in a professional
studio, so I can only guess that they're much more in line with the
stuff on the self-titled EP. |
Gotterdammerung 7" EP
Lost and Found Records #lf028
Track Listing:
Passout / Zone / Infinite Regression // Manna / Fat Louie / Happy
Daze / So Morose
|
|
| Another UM 7" from Lost and Found that I don't
own. According to FLEX!, this one features live versions of a number
of tracks from Rainbow Person and "Happy Daze" and
"So Morose," which were recorded at Inner Ear in 1982. |
Self-titled CD
Lost and Found Records #lf297
Track Listing:
Passout / Fugitive Family / Plain Truth / Final Solution / Own
Way / I Know a Place / It's Over / You Send Me / Wake Up / Sons
of Sunoco / Happy Daze / Tear Down / So Morose / United Mutation
/ Out of Hand / Rock'n'roll Party / Combat Boots / White Boy / DC
Screws the World / Oh No / Lice, Flies and Vermin / Take Your Pick
/ Zone / Infinite Regression / Passout (live) / Manna / Fat Louie
/ Over the Edge / Sensations Fix / Continents
|
|
| This CD has the entire s/t 7" minus the last track,
Lice and Flies (why it is omitted I have no idea, but the entire 7"
appears in its original form on the World's Finest Hardcore
CD), plus a bunch of demo and live tracks. There's a track called
"Lice, Flies and Vermin," but that's a different song. also,
the Rainbow Person 7" isn't on the CD - the versions of the songs
from it on the CD are live, probably the same ones as on the Gotterdammerung
7".
The disc is fairly annoying in that it mixes up the track orders
from the original releases, and doesn't say what release or studio
session the songs come from. (Thanks to Alex Bender for the commentary
and John (aka Count Chocula) for the scan -- ed.)
|
UM was also featured on
a number of comps, including but not limited to Mixed Nuts Don't Crack
(to which they contribute four tracks), Bouncing Babies, Alive
and Kicking, Thanks, In Crust We Trust, For a Fistful of Yen, and
All Quiet On the Western Front.
