General Notes on Restoration and 18c Drama

Bloged in Drama, Drama (general), General, Genres by Daniel Saturday December 31, 2005

From S’s class’s review session:

Over-arching themes of the course:

Transition from good nature as a desirable personality trait – you could chart the progression from Man of Mode to She Stoops to Conquer

Wit to sentimentality – any of the early plays to the London Merchant or School for Scandal

Wit (humor based on words) to farce (humor based on stage antics)

Affectation is a big theme: how is Marlowe’s attempt to play the part of the ladies’ man different from Sir Fopling Flutter?

The disappearance of the rake – who replaces the rake once he’s gone?

How does satire come up? Who is the object of satire? How is satire being used?
